Back to School in Barrhaven

In the next few weeks, all the little ones in the area will be headed back to class. Some have started this week with the majority heading back after Labour Day. Whether you are getting your child ready for their very first day of school in kindergarten or your kids are older so you’ve done this a few times, back to school can be a crazy time for everyone! Here are just a few things to help get you through it!

Watch for Emails from Your Child’s School

Whether it’s start date or required supplies, every school does it a bit differently. It’s important to ensure that you are getting the information from the right source. Most schools have already sent out emails with the “back to school basics” but if you have yet to hear anything, all school offices are open so make sure to reach out sooner than later if you have any questions. Also, be cautious of what you hear on social media; again, all schools are different and you may not be getting the right information.

Find Your Child’s Bus Stop Online

If your child will be taking the school bus to school, it’s important to check online to find out where and when they will be picked up and dropped off. If your child attends a school in the Ottawa Carleton District School Board or the Ottawa Catholic School Board, you can find their bus info through the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA). If your child is attending a French school, information can be found through Consortium de transport scolaire d’Ottawa. Also, make sure to check back on these sites in the days leading up to your child’s start date as schedules can definitely change. Through these websites, you can also sign up for notifications regarding bus changes, delays, cancellations, and school closures.

Choosing a School

Barrhaven is serviced by four major school boards: the Ottawa Carleton District School Board (English Public), the Ottawa Catholic School Board (English Catholic), Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est de l’Ontario (French Public), and Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (French Catholic). Back to School Shopping

Back to school shopping can be a hectic activity for any family! Whether you are looking for school supplies or the perfect outfit, Barrhaven has many stores to ensure that you don’t even need to leave the neighbourhood to get it all done! Barrhaven is home to all the major “big box” stores like Walmart, Staples, Costco, and Indigo but there are a few smaller hidden gems that every parent should know about:

  • Tommy Guns Barrhaven – If you have a little boy whose hair needs a trim, check out Barrhaven’s newest barber shop! With iPads in the waiting area and screens to watch movies in the mirrors, this place is a must go for your back to school “do”.
  • Boomerang Kids – If you’re looking for great deals on great quality brand name clothing, you have to check out Boomerang Kids. This consignment store has high standards for all items it takes and it’s not uncommon to find items with tags still on them on the racks. They also have a wide variety of new items including backpacks, lunch bags, and lunch packing items.
  • Scholar’s Choice – Savvy Barrhaven parents had been making the trek to Carlingwood for this store for years but as of late last year, we finally have our own! With a variety of educational supplies, toys, and items, you can’t go wrong with a trip to Scholar’s Choice.
  • Kiddie Kobbler Barrhaven – To get the newest and coolest shoes, you have to go to Kiddie Kobbler! With all the big brands and so many great deals, you and your kids will find exactly what you are looking for.
